Across Europe, the relationship between households and their energy bills has become a source of genuine anxiety. Prices remain high. Grids are under pressure from extreme weather. And consumers across the continent are asking a question that would have seemed radical not long ago: why can’t I just manage this myself? Those who do are finding lower bills, greater protection from grid disruptions, and energy that works around their lives.

EcoFlow believes that should be possible for everyone. The company designs solar, battery storage, and energy management systems for homes and businesses across Europe, and has spent the better part of a decade making self-managed energy genuinely accessible.
“These are complex challenges, but there is a unifying theme,” says Dr. Bruce Wang, the company’s CEO. “People feel they are at the mercy of events outside their hands. We are responding the way we always have – by returning control to the individual.”
More than a lower bill
Consider air conditioning. Europe’s summers are getting hotter. Many households that never needed cooling before are now seriously weighing it up. The technology is available. The sticking point, for most families, is the running cost.
Dr. Wang sees this as precisely the kind of problem energy independence solves. “Producing and storing energy, as well as drawing from the grid power when rates are cheapest can significantly reduce household energy costs. This can even include apartment dwellers using balcony solar to help run smaller AC units.”
European household electricity prices remain well above pre-2022 levels, according to Eurostat, while solar and battery costs continue to fall. The payback period for home energy systems is shortening every year as a result. “At its core,” Dr. Wang says, “energy independence means living without fear of the next electricity bill.”
Built for everyone, not just enthusiasts
This is where most smart energy propositions have historically fallen apart. The technology works, the user experience does not.
Managing a whole-home energy system once meant tracking tariff schedules, anticipating tomorrow’s solar generation, deciding when to charge the battery and when to draw from the grid.
“I have always believed technology must serve everyone, not just enthusiasts.” Dr. Wang says.
OASIS 3.0, EcoFlow’s home energy management platform, automates precisely those decisions — balancing tariffs, weather data and battery usage without the homeowner needing to intervene. EcoBot, its natural language AI assistant, goes a step further. Rather than navigating menus or adjusting settings, users simply tell it what they need.
“Imagine you’re leaving on holiday for a week,” Dr. Wang says. “Normally, you’d need to manually adjust your thermostat, turn off electric water heaters or adjust battery discharge limits. With EcoBot, you simply say: ‘I’m away until Friday. Keep my costs down.’ The system automatically configures itself to maximise energy savings for an unoccupied home. One natural statement replaces dozens of manual tweaks.”
One platform, many markets
No two European energy markets are quite alike, and EcoFlow’s product strategy reflects that.
Germany has more residential rooftop solar installations than any other European country, with over 1.33 million small systems now registered. It also has some of Europe’s highest electricity prices — around 39 cents per kilowatt-hour in the second half of 2025, against a European average of 29 cents. It is one reason storage has become particularly attractive.
The UK picture is different. Dynamic energy tariffs are increasingly mainstream, which means a household with solar, storage, and OASIS 3.0 can use its own generated power first, top up the battery overnight at cheaper grid rates, and avoid buying electricity during the expensive evening peak altogether.
Then there is the Netherlands. Around three million Dutch households already have solar panels, roughly one in three homes. Adoption was never the issue. What changes on 1 January 2027 is the value of what those panels produce. Net metering ends, and from that point self-consumption becomes the factor that determines the financial return. Early signs suggest the market is already shifting: home battery registrations more than doubled in the first half of 2026.
“A one-size-fits-all approach does not work across Europe,” Dr. Wang says. “But the underlying need is the same: people want a simple, safe and affordable way to lower their electricity bill and gain more power over their energy, without having to become technical experts.”
The case for a million batteries
Millions of home batteries connecting to European grids represents one of the most significant opportunities in the clean energy transition. The question is how to coordinate it effectively.
That is where Virtual Power Plants come in. By connecting distributed home batteries and steering them to store and dispatch power in response to real-time grid demand, VPPs turn millions of individual devices into a single co-ordinated asset. The opportunity, Dr. Wang argues, is substantial. “On a fundamental level, many grid operators already agree. That is why industry leaders are pushing forward with Virtual Power Plants.”
The pressure is already visible closer to home. In the Netherlands this summer, one energy provider began paying households to reduce their solar output during peak generation hours, a sign that grids built for predictable demand are struggling to absorb the volume of power that distributed solar now produces.
Pairing solar with smart batteries solves that problem directly: energy generated at noon gets stored and released after sunset, precisely when demand peaks and grid pressure is highest.
“Done right, a million connected batteries do not create chaos. They build a more resilient grid.”
Rules built for a different era
The barriers that remain.In Dr. Wang’s view, most European energy frameworks were designed to reward households for feeding electricity back into the grid. That made sense once. It makes less sense now.
“The logic is shifting from producing as much as possible to using as much of it as possible at home. The frameworks around households have not fully caught up with that shift.”
Germany shows what happens when the gap closes. Simplified registration rules introduced in 2024 unlocked a wave of demand, around 1.33 million small systems are now registered, with roughly one coming online every 73 seconds during 2025.
While all-in-one balcony solar systems with integrated batteries are not yet permitted under current German regulation, the market is evolving rapidly as standards catch up with consumer demand.
The Netherlands shows where this is heading. When the value of selling power back to the grid falls, storing it at home makes more financial sense. A home battery is what makes that possible.
Dr. Wang points to one further opportunity. The revised EU electricity market design directive gave households the right to share electricity with one another.
“Implemented properly, it would let neighbours use power that today is simply exported at low value. None of that is a technology problem. It is a coordination problem, and it is solvable.”
From home to business and beyond
Energy independence is no longer a purely domestic ambition. EcoFlow recently entered the European commercial and industrial storage market with Alps, the first product in its new A-Series range, bringing the same platform logic to offices, businesses, and light industrial premises.
Dr. Wang sees it as a milestone in a longer journey. “EcoFlow has officially become the only brand in the industry to achieve a true full-scenario energy layout, spanning portable power, balcony solar, whole-home energy storage, and now commercial and industrial applications.”
The household of the future
Ten years from now, Dr. Wang believes European families will think about energy very differently. The technology will handle the complexity, leaving households free to simply enjoy affordable, reliable power.
“I see more Europeans taking measures to ensure they are not at the mercy of high energy bills and grid volatility. They will be generating, storing and using clean power on their own terms, while smart technology increasingly handles optimisation in the background.”
For those who want visibility and control over their energy use, EcoFlow’s platform gives them that. For those who simply want reliable, affordable power from the socket without thinking about it, the technology works quietly in the background. Dr. Wang’s ambition, he says, is to make both possible, and to keep closing the gap between where European households are today and where they could be.
And the ambition, Dr. Wang says, is the same one he started with.
