Across India, a fortune worth trillion lies not in mutual funds or fixed deposits, but as idle gold in lockers and cupboards, locked away, unutilised, and silently depreciating in opportunity cost. Indian households and temple trust collectively hold around 30,000-32,000 tonnes of gold worth $3.8 trillion. This ‘untapped economy’ is both a cultural heritage and a highly valuable source of wealth that, over the course of generations, has been built up as heirloom money and emergency money.
Despite being the second largest consumer of gold in the world, the recycling of gold in India is still not a common practice. The likely solution to bridging the gap between the two could change India’s perception of the yellow metal. With credible players setting up the system and driving change, recycling offers a solution to reduce import dependence and support national economic goals.
The slow but gradual change
India ranks fourth globally in gold recycling, with approximately 11% of its gold supply coming from recycled sources over the past five years. However, this still pales in comparison to global benchmarks.
Fortunately, the ecosystem is starting to be more structured. It is being driven by credible players such as MMTC-PAMP, who are leading this transformation by introducing transparency, scientific testing, and trust into a sector traditionally dominated by informal channels. The use of advanced German XRF technology, certified precision scales, and non-destructive purity testing is replacing the opaque touchstone method, providing customers with fair valuations without risking any damage to their gold. However, penetration of the formal sector is still limited, particularly in rural India, where most of India’s gold is stored.
The barriers: culture, awareness, and trust
What is the reason that a significant portion of gold is idle, even in the face of price hikes and economic incentives? The answer lies in the cultural roots of India. Gold is so much more than a commodity here. It is a family heirloom, a sign of financial security, and a safety net for emergencies. Emotional and heirloom value often outweighs financial incentives for Indian families, which is associated with selling or recycling. For generations, families have held onto jewellery as a long-term legacy asset, especially women, and for many, this is an unwelcome choice even with the best price triggers that come into play.
Limited awareness of scientific purity testing and concerns about unfair valuations continue to push many consumers towards informal buyers.
Sustainability and national economic objectives
Gold mining is carbon-intensive. Recycling reduces the need for fresh mining, conserves resources and supports a more circular economy.
Beyond the environment, recycling directly supports India’s broader economic objectives. Gold imports remain the second-largest driver of India’s import bill after crude oil, accounting for 12.3 per cent of total imports in 2025-26.
It is estimated that the 1 per cent utilisation of gold from the gold stock of the households and temples in the country each year will reduce the gold imports by 25-30 per cent. This would ease pressure on foreign currency reserves, reduce the current account deficit, and support the government’s drive towards self-reliance.
The way forward
In the future, the popularity of gold recycling in India will come down to a fine line between cultural respect and the creation of contemporary and reliable systems. Credible players are focused on organisation, transparency, and expanding collection and purity testing centres beyond metros into tier-2 and tier-3 cities, where most of the gold is stored in India. The process of digitisation of deposit transactions and the streamlining of purity evaluations will be crucial. It will give the country a genuine opportunity to shift from an ‘import-and-store’ model to a ‘circulate-and-recycle’ one.
