Energy markets experienced substantial gains on Tuesday as renewed military confrontations between Washington and Tehran reignited concerns about potential supply chain disruptions. Brent crude futures advanced to $91.87 per barrel, with U.S. West Texas Intermediate climbing to $87.15.

These benchmark contracts had already posted approximately 3% gains in the previous trading session, extending a rally fueled by intensifying Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions.
Military Confrontation Breaks Period of Relative Stability
The current escalation emerged following American military operations targeting Iranian installations on Larak Island, shattering several weeks of comparative tranquility. Tehran’s response included missile strikes directed at American military positions in Jordan.
President Trump committed to a forceful counterresponse, amplifying market anxieties that direct military engagement could expand and endanger critical energy infrastructure throughout the Persian Gulf.
“These bring the potential for Iranian retaliation back into the equation,” said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM. “Both of those risks are being reflected in the firmer tone in crude prices.”
The Strait of Hormuz historically transported approximately one-fifth of worldwide oil supplies prior to hostilities commencing in late February. Iranian authorities closed the critical waterway following coordinated U.S.-Israeli military actions against the nation on February 28.
Diplomatic initiatives spearheaded by Qatar and Oman aimed at restoring passage through the strait have thus far proven unsuccessful.
Maritime Traffic Experiences Dramatic Decline
Maritime tracking data from Kpler revealed only five commercial vessels navigated the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, representing a substantial drop from the recent 10-day average of approximately 14 ships. Notably, none of these five vessels were liquid cargo tankers.
On Tuesday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations authority confirmed that a tanker sustained impacts from three projectiles during its departure from the strait. The incident resulted in no reported injuries or environmental contamination.
ANZ market analysts highlighted that petroleum flowing through Hormuz has decreased to roughly 6 million barrels daily, considerably beneath pre-conflict volumes.
While crude shipments through this critical passage had demonstrated modest improvement in recent weeks, the latest military actions have jeopardized this fragile recovery.
Emergency Reserves Approach Critical Levels
The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve decreased by approximately 3.1 million barrels during the previous week, currently registering at 286.6 million barrels—approaching its lowest inventory level in more than four decades. President Trump indicated that petroleum from a recently negotiated Venezuelan agreement would contribute to replenishment efforts, though delivery schedules for these supplies remain uncertain.
OPEC+ member nations authorized an additional production expansion of roughly 188,000 barrels daily beginning in September, finalizing its scheduled output restoration. Russia simultaneously prolonged its diesel export prohibition through September 30, intensifying constraints on refined petroleum product availability.
