The share of natural gas in India’s primary energy supply has risen, albeit marginally to 7.12 per cent on a provisional basis in FY25, Parliament was informed on Thursday.
As per Energy Statistics 2026 released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), the share of natural gas in India’s total primary energy supply was 7.12 per cent (provisional) during FY25, Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas Suresh Gopi said in a written response in Lok Sabha.
While the share of natural gas in the primary energy mix was 7 per cent in FY24, this share was around 6.7 per cent in FY23.
Citing a report by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), Gopi said that India’s natural gas demand is projected to grow to around 260 to 300 million standard cubic meters per day (MSCMD) by 2030 under the base case scenario.
“The projected increase in demand is attributed primarily to expansion of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network, increasing adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the transport sector, rising penetration of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in domestic
and commercial segments, and growing industrial demand for cleaner fuels,” he added.
