European natural gas is having a moment nobody asked for. Dutch TTF front-month futures peaked at €84/MWh in early-to-mid September 2026, the highest price point since December 2022, and traders have good reason to be nervous heading into winter.
The core problem is storage. EU gas inventories sit at roughly 68% full as of mid-September 2026, about 16 percentage points below the five-year seasonal average of around 84%. In absolute terms, that works out to approximately 74.5 billion cubic meters, which is about 14 billion cubic meters less than the same point last year and the lowest storage volume since 2013.
How Europe got here
Two compounding forces drove the shortfall. First, geopolitical tensions linked to the US-Iran conflict disrupted LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for Qatari LNG shipments heading toward European regasification terminals. Qatar is one of Europe’s key flexible suppliers, so any restriction there hits storage replenishment directly.
Second, routine but poorly timed maintenance work in Norway reduced pipeline flows during a period when Europe could least afford it. Norway is Europe’s single largest pipeline gas supplier, so even temporary output cuts create outsized pressure on spot markets and storage injection rates.
The result is a market that needs prices to stay elevated to do a specific job: make European import terminals attractive enough for LNG cargo operators to divert shipments from Asia and Latin America toward Europe.
The storage math and what it means for winter
European policymakers have not been idle. The European Commission introduced flexible storage targets that allow inventories to dip as low as 75% under difficult supply conditions, a formal acknowledgment that the original targets may be out of reach this cycle. The Commission also noted that demand across the bloc has fallen by roughly 17% compared to pre-crisis levels, which meaningfully reduces the risk of outright shortages even at current storage levels.
Prices hovering between €80 and €84/MWh are doing two things simultaneously: rationing existing demand by making gas expensive enough that industrial users reconsider consumption, and signaling to global LNG sellers that European terminals will pay a premium for cargoes.
What to watch as winter approaches
For energy markets, the near-term risk indicators are fairly clear. Weekly storage injection data from Gas Infrastructure Europe will be closely tracked; any week where injections fall short of seasonal norms will put upward pressure on TTF futures.
The Strait of Hormuz situation adds a geopolitical layer that is harder to model. If US-Iran tensions ease and Qatari LNG flows normalize, European import capacity gets meaningful relief heading into the coldest months. If the disruption persists or worsens, the market will need prices to climb further to source replacement volumes from other exporters, including the US Gulf Coast and West African producers.
Energy-intensive industries across Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands are already adjusting production schedules in response to elevated prices, a form of demand destruction that reduces the immediate supply gap but carries its own economic costs.
