Iran has resumed gas production at three offshore South Pars platforms after disruption caused by damage to onshore processing facilities, IRNA reported. The field is shared with Qatar and supplies most of Iran’s natural gas.
TEHRAN: Iran has resumed gas production at three offshore platforms in the South Pars field after wartime disruption linked to damage at onshore processing facilities.
The interruption followed US-Israeli attacks that affected onshore facilities connected to the giant gas field. Touraj Dehqani, chief executive of the Pars Oil and Gas Company, said efforts to restore output at South Pars were advancing despite the recent disruption.
Attributing the progress to the work of technical teams and production management, Dehqani said the field’s gas production and processing capacity was being brought back in stages. He said three offshore South Pars platforms had already returned to the production cycle.
In remarks, Dehqani said several offshore platforms tied to damaged refineries had been forced to halt output during the US-Israeli war even though the offshore installations themselves remained fully operational. “The recovery of rich gas production and processing capacity in this shared field is moving forward in a favourable manner.”
He said the restoration effort was being supported by the technical capabilities of oil industry specialists, integrated production management, and maximum use of existing capacities. “Three offshore South Pars platforms have so far returned to the production cycle.”
Dehqani said the stoppage had not been caused by damage to the offshore platforms themselves, but by the inability to receive and process the gas at onshore sites after the related refineries were hit. “In spite of their full operational readiness and without any damage to the offshore facilities themselves, production had to be stopped because there was no possibility of receiving and processing the produced gas onshore.”
Shared field
South Pars, which Iran shares with neighbouring Qatar, is described as the world’s largest natural gas field. It accounts for most of Iran’s natural gas production.
Operations at the field were partially disrupted after Israeli strikes targeted energy infrastructure in the Assaluyeh region in March.
