The article “Not just stoves: Gas leaks in homes may be widespread” (Page A1, June 11) raises questions worthy of further scrutiny. Our industry supports rigorous, science-based research into indoor air quality and natural gas, but it is clear that natural gas, when properly utilized, is a safe and affordable heating and cooking option.
One point in the article deserves special attention: the suggestion that a homeowner solved a gas leak by applying “putty” to a faulty pipe connection.
Natural gas safety depends on proper inspection and maintenance by qualified professionals. Any suspected gas leak, large or small, should be evaluated by the local gas utility. Temporary, do-it-yourself fixes may conceal a problem rather than resolve it and can create additional safety risks.
The natural gas industry invests heavily in leak detection, pipeline modernization, and public safety programs because protecting customers is our highest priority. Natural gas detectors are an additional option for those who want further protection.
While discussions about future energy choices are important, they should not distract from a simple message: If you smell gas or suspect a leak, leave the area and call 911 or your gas company immediately. Never rely on improvised repairs.
