Crude prices fall as prospects of a temporary Strait of Hormuz corridor ease fears of prolonged disruption to global oil supplies.
US oil prices extended their losses on Wednesday as hopes grew that Iran and Oman could make progress on talks aimed at easing the disruption around the Strait of Hormuz.
The prospect of a temporary corridor through the strategic waterway has eased some concerns over prolonged disruptions to global oil flows, weighing on crude prices. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global energy supplies, making developments around the waterway closely watched by oil markets.
Iran and Oman have been discussing a possible temporary arrangement to facilitate the movement of vessels through the strait as negotiations between Iran and the United States remain deadlocked. The talks have raised hopes that shipping activity could gradually normalise.
The market reaction comes as traders continue to assess how much oil is actually moving through the waterway. The US administration has said significant volumes of crude and oil products are continuing to pass through Hormuz, but shipping and energy data firms have struggled to independently verify the full volumes being cited.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said last week that more than 15 million barrels of crude and oil products had moved out of the waterway on one day, while putting average exports through the strait over a seven-day period at more than 8 million barrels per day. Earlier this month, Wright had estimated the seven-day average at around 9 million barrels per day.
The conflicting assessments have added uncertainty to the outlook for global oil supply. Any sustained reopening of the waterway could reduce the risk premium built into crude prices, while a renewed escalation could quickly reverse the recent decline.
For now, traders are focusing on diplomatic efforts involving Iran and Oman and whether they can produce a workable arrangement for shipping through Hormuz. The Strait remains one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, meaning even a temporary disruption can have significant implications for crude markets, freight rates and fuel prices.
