Hello. In this post, I will review XAUUSD (Gold/USD) for Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

In conclusion, gold on this day was pressured by the headwind of “rising crude oil prices → inflation concerns → rising US interest rates,” leading to a 3rd consecutive day of decline. Although it saw a sharp temporary rebound during the NY session on reports of a US-Iran peace proposal, it was a day that stalled after diplomatic sources denied the news.

I will organize the reasons for the price movement chronologically, using both fundamental and technical analysis.

1. 10/20 Price Movement Summary

Item Level (Approx.) Open Around $4,138 High Around $4,154 (NY time approx. 10:25) Low Around $4,111 (NY time approx. 6:00) Close Around $4,121 (approx. -0.4 to -0.5% from previous day)

  • 3rd consecutive trading day of decline

  • Moving within the $4,100–$4,200 range seen since the start of October

  • Daily candle closed as a bearish candle while leaving both upper and lower wicks

*All times are in Eastern Time (ET). Figures are estimates based on various media reports and may differ by a few dollars depending on the broker.

2. Underlying Fundamentals

① Rising crude oil prices are strengthening the “inflation → rate hike” narrative

The biggest theme of the day was crude oil.

  • Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed to have attacked Saudi energy facilities (unconfirmed by the Saudi side)

  • Iran continues to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz

  • Brent crude briefly hit the $110 level (highest in about 5 months)

Usually, Middle East tensions would lead to “safe-haven gold buying,” but that is not the case in the current market. The flow of rising crude oil → reignited inflation → additional Fed rate hikes → rising US interest rates → gold (which pays no interest) is at a disadvantage is having a stronger effect.

② US interest rates and the dollar remain high

September CPI was 3.7% YoY (forecast 3.6%), and PPI was 6.3% (forecast 5.3%), with last week’s inflation indicators both coming in higher than expected. According to the CME FedWatch,

is how it is priced in. The mood that a “December rate hike is almost certain” is weighing on gold’s upside.

③ There are also factors supporting the downside

On the other hand, the reason the decline is not a one-sided collapse is due to these points.

  • The People’s Bank of China purchased 23 tons of gold in September(the largest amount since October 2023)

  • Capital inflows into gold ETFs continue, and holdings are at record highs

  • Demand for safe-haven assets due to Middle East tensions and fiscal concerns in various countries

It is a dynamic where “it is sold off due to interest rates, but central bank buying picks it up at the bottom.”

3. Price movement on 10/20 in chronological order

🌏 Asia to London time: Broke below 4,150 → fell to 4,111

  • Although it started in the 4,140 dollar range during Asian hours, it could not recover to 4,150 dollars and drifted lower

  • During London hours, crude oil rose (WTI was in the 102 dollar range) and the dollar was also bought back

  • Around 6:00 AM NY time, it hit a low of around 4,111 dollars

What is important here is that it did not break the psychological level of 4,100 dollars.

🗽 First half of NY time: Sharp rebound on peace proposal reports

  • 8:30 US housing starts -5.2% (forecast +1.9%)

  • 10:00 Pending home sales -7.3%

  • And in the 10 o’clock hour, reports of “US and Iran reach ‘tentative agreement’ on Qatar-Pakistan mediation proposal”

This report caused crude oil to plummet (WTI briefly hit the high $90s). With inflation concerns easing,

As a result, gold rebounded to a high of around $4,154 around 10:25 AM.

📉 Late NY session: Stalled as “agreement is not near”

  • Around 11:10 AM, a diplomat involved in the negotiations denied the report, stating “reports that an agreement is near are incorrect”

  • Crude oil was bought back, with WTI returning to near $100

  • US interest rates and the dollar also recovered, and gold erased its gains to close at around $4,121

It was a “round trip” day, where the price rebounded on news and then returned to its original level after the news was denied.

4. Technical levels to watch

Daily chart: Near the bottom of the range, all moving averages are above

  • 21-day SMA:approx. $4,180

  • 100-day SMA:approx. $4,235

  • 50-day SMA:approx. $4,322

  • 200-day SMA:approx. $4,518

The price is below all major moving averages, and the daily RSI is in the low 40s. The trend of lower highs and lower lows from the late August high of around $4,700 continues.

4-hour chart: Capped before the 50MA

  • The 4-hour 50MA is approx. $4,157

  • The day’s high of $4,154 stopped just below the 50MA and the $4,150 level

Even with major news like a peace report, the fact that it could not break through this line shows that sellers are strong.

Key levels to watch

Resistance levels

  • $4,150–$4,157: Round number + 4-hour 50MA (10/20 high)

  • $4,180–$4,191: 21-day SMA + last week’s rebound high

  • $4,200: Range ceiling that has been rejected multiple times this month

  • $4,235: 100-day SMA

Support levels

  • $4,100–$4,111: Psychological level + 10/20 low

  • $4,067–$4,073: 10/14 low, Fibonacci starting point

  • $4,000: Major level, late July low zone ($3,996)

5. Summary and future points of interest

Gold on 10/20 saw:

  1. Higher crude oil → Higher US interest rates → Gold selling leading to a 3rd consecutive decline

  2. It rebounded to $4,154 on reports of a peace proposal, but was stopped at the 4-hour 50MA/$4,150 level

  3. It erased its gains following denial reports and closed in the low $4,100s

That was the day.

The most important point is that current gold is moving not on “Middle East tension = gold buying,” but on “Middle East tension = higher crude oil = higher interest rates = gold selling.” Conversely, if things move in the direction of peace progress → lower crude oil → lower interest rates, it is likely to be a tailwind for gold.

Scenario I am personally watching

  • Sell-on-rally scenario: If capped between $4,150 and $4,180, the trend will test $4,100 → the $4,070 range.

  • Rebound scenario: If $4,100 holds and it clearly breaks above $4,157 on the 1-hour chart, it will head toward the upper end of the $4,180–$4,200 range.

  • Points to note: If it closes below $4,070 on a daily basis, the $4,000 mark comes into view.

Key factors to watch this week

  • Headlines related to US-Iran negotiations, the Strait of Hormuz, and Saudi facilities (spilling over into interest rates via oil)

  • 10/21 EIA crude oil inventories, Meta and Tesla earnings (stock market risk sentiment)

  • 10/22 Initial jobless claims, 10/23 October preliminary PMI

  • 10/27-28 FOMC (hints for a December rate hike)

  • Next week’s US PCE deflator

With Fed officials in a blackout period ahead of the FOMC, it seems likely that we will continue to see volatility driven by oil and US interest rate headlines for a while.
