Gold prices have corrected sharply from their January 2026 peak amid a stronger US dollar and rising bond yields. With forecasts pointing to a possible recovery, investors must weigh further downside risks, long-term goals and market uncertainty before buying

Hyderabad: International gold prices have witnessed sharp fluctuations in recent months, leaving investors uncertain about their next move. After hitting record highs in January 2026, the precious metal saw a significant correction before recovering some ground in October.
Spot gold recovered to around $4,194 an ounce on October 9, following a steep decline earlier in the week. A stronger US dollar and rising bond yields had weighed on prices, although bargain buying and changes in the dollar’s value subsequently supported a recovery.
The recent volatility has raised a key question for investors: Is this a good time to buy gold, or could prices fall further before staging a sustained recovery?
Why are gold prices falling?
Rising yields on US Treasury bonds are among the key factors putting pressure on gold. Unlike government bonds, gold does not generate interest income. When bond yields become more attractive, some investors may shift funds from gold to interest-bearing assets, reducing investment demand for the precious metal.
A stronger US dollar is another headwind. Since international gold prices are denominated in dollars, a rise in the US currency makes gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies, potentially weighing on demand.
Rising energy prices have also fuelled concerns that inflation could accelerate again. This, in turn, has raised the possibility that the US Federal Reserve may keep interest rates elevated for longer, a development that could weigh on gold prices by supporting bond yields and the dollar.
According to a Reuters report dated October 7, gold fell to $4,113.89 an ounce that day, its lowest level in two months. Prices subsequently recovered as the dollar weakened, bond yields shifted and buyers entered the market at lower levels.
The rebound suggests that selling pressure has been accompanied by renewed buying interest at cheaper prices. However, it does not necessarily signal the beginning of a sustained upward trend.
How far have prices fallen from the January peak?
Gold touched an estimated high of around $5,595 an ounce on January 29, 2026. Compared with that level, the price of the precious metal was about 25% lower by October 10.
However, international spot prices and domestic gold rates do not move in exactly the same way. In India, prices are also influenced by the rupee-dollar exchange rate, import duties, taxes and local market conditions. Rates for 22-carat and 24-carat gold can therefore differ from the movement in international prices.
Where could gold prices head by the end of 2026?
Despite the recent correction, some major financial institutions remain optimistic about gold’s longer-term prospects, although their forecasts have changed.
According to estimates released by JPMorgan Global Research in June, gold’s average price could reach $6,000 an ounce in the fourth quarter of 2026. The bank also projected that prices could rise to $6,300 an ounce by the end of 2027.
The latest projection for the fourth quarter of 2026 is lower than JPMorgan’s earlier forecast of $6,300 an ounce, issued in February. The $300 reduction highlights the uncertainty surrounding the near-term outlook, even as the bank continues to anticipate higher prices over the longer term.
Gold’s direction will depend on several factors, including the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions, inflation trends, energy prices, the strength of the dollar and geopolitical developments. Changes in central bank demand and broader investment flows could also influence prices.
Forecasts, however, are not guarantees. Actual prices may differ substantially depending on how these factors evolve.
Should investors buy gold now or wait?
The decision depends on an investor’s financial goals, investment horizon and ability to withstand market fluctuations.
Long-term investors: Those who have already decided to allocate part of their portfolio to gold could consider staggered purchases rather than investing a large amount at once. This approach can spread the purchase price over time, although it does not eliminate the risk of losses.
Short-term investors: Buying solely because prices have fallen can be risky. Short-term price movements may remain volatile, making it important to monitor the dollar, US bond yields and signals from the Federal Reserve.
Existing gold holders: A price correction alone need not trigger an immediate sale. Investors should reassess their original objectives, the proportion of their portfolio held in gold and their liquidity requirements before making a decision.
Jewellery buyers: Those purchasing gold for festivals or weddings should compare prevailing rates as well as making charges, wastage charges and hallmarking details. The final cost of jewellery can differ significantly from the quoted gold rate.
Could gold prices fall further?
A further decline remains possible. A stronger US dollar, rising bond yields or an extended period of high interest rates could exert additional pressure on gold.
Conversely, a weaker dollar, expectations of interest rate cuts or an escalation in geopolitical tensions could support prices. A shift in investor sentiment or stronger demand for gold as a safe-haven asset could also help the metal recover.
For investors, the key is to avoid treating a price correction as a guarantee of a bargain. Gold’s near-term direction remains uncertain, and decisions should be based on financial goals, risk tolerance and investment timelines rather than short-term price movements alone.
