Bloom Energy is surging while its closest fuel cell peers barely budge, and the reason behind the split reveals something important about where AI power demand is actually landing.

A risk-on tape is lifting high-beta fuel cell names on Thursday, but the group is splitting sharply on the way up. Bloom Energy (NYSE:BE) stock is up 8% to $233.69 in midday trading. That’s a large single-session move against much more muted action from its two closest hydrogen and fuel cell peers.
At the same time, FuelCell Energy (NASDAQ:FCEL) stock is up 1% to $14.57, and Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) shares are up 0.7% to $2.11. For sector and market framing, the Global X Hydrogen ETF (NASDAQ:HYDR) is up 3% to $42.74, while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY), which tracks the S&P 500, is up 1% to $772.64.
Bloom Energy has become the high-beta expression of the AI onsite power theme, and a broad risk-on session lifts the stock more than its peers. The move here is about positioning momentum. Same-day options positioning offers little confirmation either way, with Bloom Energy’s full-chain put/call ratio at 0.52, tilted modestly toward calls.
No Fresh Bloom Energy Headline, Just Momentum
There isn’t a company-specific catalyst behind the move in Bloom Energy stock today. The setup traces back to Bloom Energy’s Q2 FY2026 print on July 28, when revenue of $1.07 billion (up 165.5% year over year, or YoY) beat an $827 million estimate and non-GAAP EPS of $0.78 topped a $0.41 consensus. Bloom Energy raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $3.9 billion to $4.2 billion, and CEO KR Sridhar stated, “Bloom is now a standard for AI onsite power.”
Divergence Inside the Fuel Cell Group
The split inside the trio argues against reading Thursday’s tape as a sector move. Bloom Energy stock is running hard with the risk-on bid, while FuelCell Energy and Plug Power sit close to flat despite the same macro backdrop. HYDR’s 3% gain outpaces SPY, but that largely reflects a Bloom Energy weighting effect given its 15.5% position in the fund.
FuelCell Energy reported Q3 FY2026 on September 2 and missed on both lines, with revenue of $33.0 million versus a $38.8 million estimate and a $17.0 million charge tied to Phase 0 Fit Energy contractual pricing. The company did secure its first order for fuel cell energy blocks to supply baseload power for data center applications, with committed and awarded capacity backlog of $3.6 billion.
Plug Power’s Q2 FY2026 report on August 10 beat on both lines and lifted full-year 2026 revenue growth guidance to 15% to 16%. Management is targeting positive EBITDAS in Q4 2026, supported by an asset monetization initiative aiming at $275 million in aggregate liquidity with $52 million collected to date.
Scorecard: Single-Session Move Versus YTD Anchor
The longer view supplies context that today’s tape can’t. Bloom Energy was up 150% year to date (YTD) through the prior close, so the stock entered the session already carrying an enormous annual run before Thursday’s 8% add. FuelCell Energy was up 97% YTD, while Plug Power was up 6% YTD through the prior close.
With the major market indexes rising today, Bloom Energy stock reflects a broader risk appetite rather than a fresh company catalyst. Reddit sentiment on Bloom Energy has been bullish in recent observations, though mention counts stayed low, indicating a supportive but narrow retail tone.
What to Watch
Beyond today, the next fundamental catalyst for the group is the pace of AI data center order announcements. Bloom Energy has the clearest lead on that front, FuelCell Energy’s Texas capacity reservation and Fit Energy phasing are the next items to prove out, and Plug Power’s Q4 EBITDAS target is the key credibility test. Any of those moving decisively could break the divergence Thursday’s tape is showing.
The close is the next test for the 8% move in Bloom Energy stock. If the gap with FuelCell Energy and Plug Power widens through the afternoon, the single-name read strengthens; if the two peers catch up, a stronger sector-breadth case emerges.
