Europa Oil and Gas has submitted an application to North Yorkshire Council to construct a temporary wellsite, including a 38-metre drilling rig, to test for natural gas using a method known as a proppant squeeze.
Cllr Heather Phillips, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for corporate services, said: “We recognise that this is a planning application that has attracted significant public interest.
“We have received more than 1,500 representations as part of the planning process, and we understand that many people feel strongly and passionately about the proposals that have been submitted.
“As with all planning applications, I would like to reassure everyone that all representations will be carefully considered by members of the committee prior to any decision being made.”
North Yorkshire councillors will discuss the application at a meeting of the strategic planning committee on Friday, January 30, at 1.30pm, at Scarborough Town Hall.
A site visit by committee members is planned ahead of the meeting, which will also be streamed live on the council’s YouTube channel.
