The United States currently pumps more crude oil from the ground than any other nation in history, yet drivers pulling up to the pump continue to face stubbornly high fuel costs. While record domestic output might seem like an automatic ticket to cheap gasoline, the machinery connecting oil wells to local gas stations operates on global pricing, specialized refinery hardware, and regional distribution costs that keep pump prices separate from domestic drill counts.
The primary factor is that oil is a globally traded commodity. Crude oil produced in Texas or North Dakota is sold on an open international market where its price is shaped by worldwide supply decisions, shipping disruptions, and demand shifts abroad.
Because American drillers can sell their product overseas at global benchmark rates, domestic refiners must pay those same market prices to buy American crude. A barrel pumped in West Texas does not carry a home-country discount.

A structural mismatch between domestic crude and domestic refineries creates another layer of complexity. Decades ago, U.S. refineries along the Gulf Coast invested billions of dollars to process heavy, sour crude traditionally imported from countries like Canada, Mexico, and South America.
The recent domestic production surge, however, yields mostly light, sweet crude from shale formations. Because many U.S. refineries cannot efficiently run solely on light crude without costly modifications, the U.S. exports vast amounts of its own light oil while continuing to import heavy crude from abroad to meet domestic fuel demand.
Crude oil also represents only about half the cost of a gallon of finished retail gasoline. The remaining balance comes from the refining process, marketing, transportation through pipelines and tanker trucks, and retail station margins.
Refining capacity in the U.S. has tightened in recent years due to facility retirements, maintenance downtime, and conversions to renewable diesel, keeping the processing margin—known as the “crack spread”—higher than historical averages.

Taxes and regional regulations account for the final differences drivers see on price boards across the country. Federal excise taxes add 18.4 cents per gallon nationwide, but state and local fuel taxes range from under 20 cents to over 60 cents per gallon depending on the jurisdiction.
In addition, environmental mandates require refiners to switch to costlier, cleaner-burning summer-blend fuels each spring, adding direct production expenses that persist through the high-demand summer driving season.
While record domestic drilling provides substantial supply to the broader energy market, gasoline prices remain tied to a global network of crude benchmarks, specialized refinery physics, and regional delivery economics.
