KMK Metals Recycling granted permission for new standalone battery processing facility in Kilbeggan

KMK Metals Recycling Ltd has secured planning permission from Westmeath County Council for the construction of a new standalone battery processing building at its facility in the Meeniska and Meadowpark townlands on the Moate Road, Kilbeggan.

The decision, made on June 29, 2026, follows the submission of the planning application on December 8, 2025. Planning permission was granted subject to 13 conditions. The approved development includes the construction of a 765-square-metre battery processing building with a maximum height of 6.8 metres.

The project also provides for amendments to previously approved plans for a canopy on the western side of the existing building, reducing the permitted floor area from 2,715 square metres to 1,652 square metres while maintaining the approved height of 11.15 metres. In addition, permission has been granted for a new 490-square-metre lean-to canopy on the eastern side of the existing building, along with the retention and completion of 11 partially constructed car parking spaces at the southern end of the site.

Associated site works also form part of the development.

KMK Metals Recycling is a national leader in the recycling of metals, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), batteries and business IT equipment. The company says it continues to invest in the latest recycling technology to provide waste management solutions across Ireland.

The Kilbeggan facility operates under an EPA Industrial Emissions Licence and has undergone significant expansion in recent years.

Planning approval was granted in 2018 for an increase in processing capacity to 50,000 tonnes of WEEE and metals annually, with that permission extended until July 13, 2026. A separate planning permission also facilitated the construction of a dedicated site entrance and access road, replacing the previous shared entrance.

The latest approval marks another step in the continued development of the Kilbeggan recycling facility and its battery processing capabilities.
