Libya’s state National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced today that yesterday, the technical teams at Mellitah Oil & Gas successfully implemented an innovative natural gas feed-in process, known as “reverse feed,” from the Mellitah Industrial Complex to the Ruwais power plant.
The NOC described the achievement as ‘a remarkable technical operation’ to supply the Ruwais power plant with gas which contributes to the stability of the electricity grid.
The NOC reported that the initial feed rate reached approximately 25 million cubic feet per day, bringing the total amount transferred to an estimated 440,000 standard cubic meters per day, with the potential to gradually increase the capacity to 100 million cubic feet per day.
The NOC said this exceptional achievement, resulting from the directives and direct oversight of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), enabled GECOL to immediately shut down the diesel-powered turbines and switch to natural gas-powered turbines with a production capacity of up to 100 megawatts in the first phase, just before the summer peak.
This, it added, provides significant operational flexibility to the electricity grid and noticeably reduces liquid fuel consumption costs.
NOC commitment to supply gas to Ruwais
In this regard, the Chairman of the NOC reiterated the NOC’s commitment to providing the necessary quantities of gas to operate the Ruwais station at its full production capacity of more than 750 megawatts, despite the difficulties and limited resources.
Libyan cadres commended
He also commended the high flexibility and superior technical efficiency of the national cadres in dealing with complex operational bottlenecks.
To continue efforts to develop the discovered and undeveloped gas fields
He also stressed that the sector would continue its strategic plan to intensify efforts and provide the required support and resources to develop the discovered and undeveloped gas fields, to meet the needs of the local market and export the surplus to global markets.
