Harmony Gold just posted its best fiscal year ever, yet the CEO is telling investors the real payoff does not arrive until after 2030. Here is what that bet looks like when you strip out the gold price tailwind.

Harmony Gold Mining (NYSE:HMY | HMY Price Prediction) reported a record fiscal 2026 on Aug. 27, with headline earnings up 87% to $1.61 billion and adjusted EPS of $2.58. Yet the stock is down 9.45% over the past six months despite ripping 31.42% higher over the past month. CEO Beyers Nel framed the real reward as coming after 2030, and investors seem to be listening.
Gold Price Did the Heavy Lifting
Nearly all the upside came from the market, not the mine. The average gold price received jumped 35% to $3,811 an ounce, pushing revenue up 34% to $5.88 billion. Harmony also converted that into cash, generating a record $1.01 billion in adjusted free cash flow, up 54% year over year, and returned a record R8.1 billion (US$503 million) to shareholders. The final dividend of 750 SA cents (about 46 cents) per share caps an 11th straight year of hitting production guidance.
Mining Metrics Went the Wrong Way
Strip out the price tailwind and the operating picture softens. Gold production fell 3% to 1,429,551 ounces, all-in sustaining costs rose 13%, and the balance sheet swung from net cash to R852 million in net debt after the MAC Copper deal. FY27 guidance calls for 1.30 million to 1.40 million ounces, below what Harmony just produced. Compare that to rival Gold Fields (NYSE:GFI), which filed a day earlier at $4,678 an ounce realized and free cash flow more than doubling to $2.2 billion. Same gold market, very different operational leverage.

You’ll want to keep an eye on unit costs. If gold cools, cost inflation is what shows up in the margin line first.
CEO Points to a Post-2030 Payoff
Nel was blunt about the timeline. “Up to 2025, we focused on portfolio progression and improvement. Between 2026 and 2030, we will focus on execution and unlocking the value already embedded in our assets. Beyond 2030, we expect a meaningful cash flow inflection as margins strengthen, costs decline and free cash flow expands.” He added that Harmony’s “gold and copper portfolio provides optionality” and the balance sheet provides “resilience.” I liked the candor. Management is not pretending FY27 is the breakout year.
Watching Eva Copper and the Cost Line
The next 24 months are execution years. That means Eva Copper construction after the November 2025 Final Investment Decision, integrating CSA, and delivering on the Tshepong North life extension from 6 to 15 years.
