The global retail trading industry navigated a transitional environment in 2025 as online trading platforms faced shifting client acquisition dynamics, tighter regulatory oversight, and evolving trader behaviour. Against this backdrop, TradingPRO’s latest business intelligence report suggests that retail trading participation remained resilient, supported by stable trader engagement and growing adoption of advanced trading platforms.
According to the report, new account registrations moderated by 29.5% year-on-year, reflecting broader changes in acquisition patterns across the retail trading industry. Despite this slowdown in new registrations, overall trading participation remained comparatively stable, indicating that existing traders continued to engage actively in global financial markets, including forex trading and commodities.
Trading Activity Strengthens Amid Market Volatility
Trading engagement improved gradually throughout the year, with participation levels strengthening in the second half as traders responded to heightened market volatility. Annual trading volume recorded only a 9% year-on-year adjustment, highlighting the resilience of trading activity despite evolving acquisition patterns across the industry.
Volatility-driven instruments played a central role in sustaining engagement during the year. Gold trading (XAUUSD) emerged as one of the most actively traded assets as retail traders reacted to macroeconomic developments such as shifting interest rate expectations, inflation trends, and geopolitical uncertainty.
This behaviour reflects a broader trend in which retail traders increasingly focus on short-term opportunities in highly liquid instruments across the FX and commodities markets.
Regional Participation Trends
The report highlights several participation trends across global trading communities.
In Indonesia, trader participation remained steady throughout the year, supported by consistent onboarding activity and healthy funding conversion relative to registrations.
Meanwhile, South Africa recorded the highest first-time deposit conversion rate at 46.8% of registrations, indicating strong trader commitment once accounts are opened. In the Philippines, funding participation also showed encouraging progress, with first-time deposit conversion reaching 18.3% of registrations, suggesting improving trader engagement within the market.
Emerging markets such as Nigeria continued to generate strong registration demand, reinforcing the region’s long-term potential for participation in online forex trading as onboarding efficiency continues to improve.
MetaTrader 5 Adoption Expands
One of the most notable structural developments highlighted in the report was the continued migration toward MetaTrader 5 (MT5).
Adoption of the platform increased steadily during the year as traders shifted toward environments offering improved execution capabilities, advanced analytics tools, and greater trading flexibility. The transition toward MT5 has been particularly visible among more active traders seeking greater control over trading strategies across FX pairs, commodities, and volatility-driven instruments.
Strategy-based account models, including copy trading structures, also gained traction as traders explored new ways to participate in financial markets.
Onboarding Funnel Highlights Growth Opportunities
The report’s analysis of the onboarding funnel highlights both strong participation and additional growth potential.
Approximately 57% of newly registered accounts completed verification, creating a solid base of traders eligible to participate in live trading. Funding behaviour also demonstrated encouraging trends, with first-time deposit conversion rates reaching as high as 46.8% of registrations in certain markets.
These figures suggest that continued improvements in onboarding efficiency and trader activation could significantly expand participation across the retail trading ecosystem.
Stable Active Trader Community
Despite evolving acquisition patterns, the platform maintained a stable base of active traders throughout 2025, underscoring continued interest in leveraged trading products.
The stability of the active trading community highlights the importance of reliable trading infrastructure, market access, and trader engagement in sustaining participation during periods of industry transition.
Outlook for Retail Trading Participation
Retail traders today are far more responsive to macroeconomic developments and volatility across global markets. Our 2025 report shows that despite shifts in acquisition patterns, trader engagement remains resilient, particularly as more participants adopt advanced trading platforms such as MetaTrader 5.
Looking ahead, the report suggests that retail traders are becoming increasingly adaptive to macro-driven market conditions.
As global financial markets continue to respond to changing interest rate policies, inflation expectations, and geopolitical developments, retail traders are expected to remain active participants in forex trading, gold trading (XAUUSD), and other volatility-sensitive instruments.
With improving platform capabilities, growing MT5 adoption, and stronger engagement during volatility-driven market periods, retail participation is likely to remain an important contributor to global FX market activity in the years ahead.
