A new farming scheme has been launched in Cumbria by the Duchess of Edinburgh to support first-generation farmers across the county.
The Duchess is visiting Cumbria for two-days to celebrate innovation and opportunity across the county’s farming communities and rural economy.
This morning she was at the official opening of a new 62-acre farm which has been refurbished by the charity the Addington Fund. Whins Farm is the first in a new scheme to be let to a young, local couple who’ve been trying to find their own tenancy and get a foothold in the industry.
As Patron of The Addington Fund since 2021, The Duchess will officially open the first farm within the charity’s New Entrant Scheme at Whins Farm. The scheme supports first-generation farmers by creating innovative pathways into agriculture.
The Duchess of Edinburgh will makes various visits during her time in the north of England with visits to Home Grown Here and to meet representatives of the Royal Countryside Fund.
There will also be visits to the Penrith Young Farmers, which has recently celebrated its 90th anniversary and West Lakeland Farmer Led Recovery CIC.
The organisations are aiming to demonstrate how partnerships across farming, education and rural communities are creating opportunities for young people.
