Key Facts
The price of silver fell to about $71.23 as of 10:30 a.m. EST on Monday, a sharp drop from a historic rally that saw the precious metal break through the $80-per-ounce price mark for the first time.
Silver has had a highly volatile Monday, hitting a high of $82.67 in early trading before dropping more than 6% later in the morning.
The price drop follows exchange operator CME Group imposing higher margin requirements on silver, which analyst Wang Yanqing from China Futures Ltd. told Bloomberg will help reduce speculative buying.
Silver had a historic run late last week in what has been a record year for precious metals, rising nearly 10% on Friday alone and smashing through record prices by surpassing the $78 mark for the first time ever.
Why Did The Price Of Silver Drop Monday?
CME Group announced last week amid the silver price surge it would increase margin requirements for silver on Monday, meaning the minimum amount of cash traders must put down is now higher. CME Group said the margin requirement increase was made “as per the normal review of market volatility to ensure adequate collateral coverage.” Some analysts have also warned amid silver’s historic surge that the metal’s price can be volatile. “Silver tends to be a product that goes parabolic, then collapses,” Brent Donnelly, president of market research firm Spectra Markets, previously told the Wall Street Journal. In October, Goldman Sachs economists predicted “more volatility and downside price risk” for silver than gold, which has also had a historic rally in 2025. Some analysts, though, say silver could still rebound. “The big picture, however, for precious metals still looks structurally supportive with easier rates ahead, persistent fiscal and geopolitical unease, and ongoing diversification demand,” Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo Bank, told The Guardian, stating “any pullbacks may be seen as opportunities for long-term investors to rebuild exposure.”
Did Other Precious Metal Prices Fall?
The price of gold fell nearly 5% Monday morning to $4,325.80, while copper also fell nearly 5% to $5.57. The price of platinum plunged, falling by more than 14% from a high of $2,572.20 in early trading to $2,120 as of about 10:30 a.m. EST.
Why Is Silver’s Price Up So Much This Year?
Despite Monday’s losses, the price of silver is still up from early December and significantly higher than the beginning of 2025. The price has surged amid several federal interest rate cuts, the increased demand for silver from AI data centers, constrained silver supply and tariff uncertainty. “Prospect of lower U.S. interest rates is still supporting demand for gold and silver, lifting both metals to new record highs,” UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo told Reuters Friday morning. The price surge has also inspired amateur investors to make speculative purchases, the Wall Street Journal reported last week, noting communities on Reddit have flocked to silver as buyers hope the price will continue to shoot up.
