OTTAWA--Canadian investors increased their exposure to U.S. shares and corporate bonds in June, even as foreign investors continued to pick up Canadian debt securities.
International securities transactions generated a net inflow of funds into the Canadian economy of 5.4 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about US$3.89 billion, Statistics Canada said Monday.
This brought the inflow in the second quarter to roughly C$55.1 billion.
Nonresident investors purchased a net C$40.83 billion in Canadian securities during the month, and made an unprecedented C$100.6 billion investment during the quarter.
Buying by foreigners included C$39.93 billion of Canadian debt securities in June, and a record C$175 billion in debt in the first half of 2026, the data agency said.
Nonresident investors also acquired C$901 million of Canadian shares in the month, following a sizeable divestment of C$16.08 billion in May.
Canadian investors bought C$35.43 billion in foreign securities in June, a pickup after an investment of C$21.89 billion the month before.
Canadians boosted their exposure to U.S. shares by about C$23.5 billion for the month, and over the first half of the year added a record C$78.1 billion of U.S. shares to their portfolios. Canadian investors also bought C$5.28 billion of foreign bonds, led by purchases of U.S. corporate bonds, largely denominated in Canadian dollars.
The monthly international securities report covers a portfolio of transactions in equity and investment fund shares, bonds and money market instruments for both Canadian and foreign issues. The activity excludes transactions in equity and debt instruments between affiliated enterprises.
