Maggie Mendelson has another medal to add to her collection.
Mendelson, a Fremont High alumnus and North Ogden native now at the University of Nebraska, helped the USA Volleyball Under-19 team win a gold medal and go unbeaten overall last week at the Pan-American Cup, which was held in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Team USA swept Brazil in three sets (25-15, 25-14, 25-17) in the championship match to win the gold medal. Mendelson had six kills, two blocks and two service aces in the championship match.
Mendelson helped Team USA’s U-18 volleyball team win bronze at the World Championship last year and won a gold medal with the USA Basketball U-16 team in the 2021 FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico.
The Pan-American Cup features teams from North, South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean.
The American team went 5-0 without dropping a set in the tournament and qualified for the 2023 FIVB World Championship.
CARR CHOSEN FOR UTAH SPORTS HOF
Norma Carr, a former Davis County teacher and college athletic director who fought for gender equality in sports, will be inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame as part of its Class of 2022 later this year.
Carr taught at Davis High in the early 1970s. In that time, as well as in subsequent years, she was a fierce advocate for girls to have the opportunity to play sports, both before and after Title IX was passed in 1972.
After Davis High, Carr coached softball volleyball and basketball at the University of Utah and then became Salt Lake Community College’s athletic director, a position she held for 25 years before retiring in 2014.
Joining Carr in the 2022 Hall of Fame class are Scott Brumfield, David Checketts, Steve Konawalchuk and Cody Wright.
Brumfield, a Utah native, played in the NFL with Cincinnati for several seasons in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Checketts, who holds degrees from the University of Utah and BYU, was the president of the Utah Jazz and the New York Knicks professional basketball teams.
Konawalchuk, a Salt Lake City native, had a 14-year career in the National Hockey League as a left winger with the Washington Capitals and the Colorado Avalanche.
Wright, from Milford, was a longtime rodeo saddle bronc rider who won two National Finals Rodeo world championships (2008 and 2010) and qualified for 13 NFRs in his career.
The Utah Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet is scheduled for at 6:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, 2022, at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City.
