Jordyn Poulter’s stolen 2020 Olympic gold medal found behind barbershop

A stolen Olympic gold medal belonging to Jordyn Poulter, a member of the 2020 U.S. women’s volleyball team, has been found behind a barbershop in Southern California, authorities said.

Poulter reported her medal stolen May 25 after the Olympian discovered her car broken into at a parking garage in Anaheim, police said Wednesday. She offered a $1,000 reward for her medal’s return.

Detectives later arrested 31-year-old Jordan Fernandez in connection with the car break-in and theft, but were not immediately able to locate the missing medal.

On Monday, the owners of Noel Barbershop in Anaheim called 911 to report finding the gold medal inside a plastic bag discarded outside their business on North State College Boulevard, police said in a statement.

Maria Carrillo and Noe Hernandez were about to throw the bag in the trash when they noticed that it was heavy and opened it to find the gold medal inside, reported NBC Los Angeles.

The barbershop proprietors handed their find over to police, who plan on returning it to Poulter.

Fernandez is charged with residential burglary, vehicle burglary, identity theft and possession of narcotics, officials said earlier this month.

Police said the suspect has a “lengthy criminal history,” including a 2020 felony robbery conviction. After serving 120 days in jail, he was picked up by cops in late Jan. 2022 for violating his probation.

Poulter was part of the team that won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, after the games were delayed a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

After the theft, Poulter spoke to ABC Eyewitness News about how upset she was to have her medal stolen. She said she takes her medal wherever she goes.

“We live this crazy life of living so many different places,” the athlete explained. “So many of us play overseas, then go home, then come out here and train. So I keep the medal on me (to show) friends and family I haven’t seen in a while, or just people in the community who want to see the medal.”
