Matthew Mortenson, Anderson Seamons and advisor Vaughn Larson were honored for placing second in the Spring 2022 Utah Stock Market Game on Friday.

LOGAN—The office of Utah Treasurer Marlo M. Oaks hosted an awards banquet to honor the winners of the Spring 2022 Utah Stock Market Game which included students from Edith Bowen Laboratory School on Friday, May 20.

Matthew Mortenson, Anderson Seamons and advisor Vaughn Larson were honored for placing second in the Spring 2022 Utah Stock Market Game on Friday.

The Edith Bowen team, composed of Matthew Mortenson, Anderson Seamons, Ethan Hamilton and advisor Library Media Specialist Vaughn Larson, placed second in the Elementary School Division.

Over 3,200 students from across the state participated in the 10-week simulation of Wall Street investing games that provides a framework for Utah students to learn about the U.S. economy and financial markets. The students competed in elementary, middle, and high school divisions.

“The Stock Market Game is an effective tool that helps students understand fundamental stock market dynamics, how future revenue and earnings growth expectations drive stock prices, the risks involved in short-term market fluctuations, and other investment concepts,” Oaks said. “I appreciate the efforts of our teachers to help improve the financial knowledge of our next generation, and I’m proud of the students for their hard work.”

During the Stock Market Game, the teams invest a hypothetical $100,000 in common stocks and diversified investment funds traded on major exchanges and are ranked based on the ending value of their investment portfolios.

Edith Bowen’s team’s investment portfolio value was $108,779.07, while the first-place winner, West Point Elementary school, ended with $109,479.85 and third place, Adams Elementary School in Layton, ended with $105,983.39.
